Futuristic settings, scientific bedazzlements and astounding warfare mark out Halo's complicated storyline.
It is a date far into the future, 2291 to be exact where scientists have created the "Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine" which is equipped to provide unlimited travel along the galaxies. 200 years pass by and human beings engage in mass colonization of planets. The groups of colonized planets are divided into the "inner colonies" besides the "outer colonies". The more developed of these two are the inner colonies which are the oldest.
The year 2525 arrives and it is discovered that Harvest, an outer colony has severed all communications with the mother planet. A ship is sent out to discover the reasons and is destroyed by the alien alliance, the Covenant. The Hierarchs, the Covenant triumvirate declare war on the humans.
The United Nations Space Command had created a covert team of super soldiers, known as the SPARTAN II project who fight heroically on the side of the humans against the Covenant's in the Holy War. However, a series of devastating defeats leave the human resistance tottering and the army of SPARTAN II gather in Reach, the strategic headquarters of the UNSC for military augmentation and rethinking. A mission is planned to discover the home base of the Covenant race by secretly boarding any of its numerous starships. Disaster strikes with ten days left for the crucial mission, when the enemy forces discover Reach and in the gargantuan struggle that follows, the colony is razed to the ground with the SPARTAN II forces annihilated.
The Covenants glass out the planet. Master Chief, the major game play character of the game manages to escape on board the cruiser, Pillar of Autumn helped out by Cortana who supplies the coordinates. The Pillar of Autumn arrives at Installation 04 and is engaged in combat by the Covenant.
The Covenant release Flood, an alien species, almost parasitic in nature on the installation.343 Guilty Spark, the AI chief of the zone commands Master Chief decides to activate the Halo which he believes will decapitate the Flood. However, Cortana discovers that activating the Halo will wipe out all sentient forms of the Galaxy rather than directly killing the Flood.
She advises Master Chief to destroy the Halo before activation by self destructing the crashed Pillar of Autumn. Master Chief reaches Captain Keyes, a human commander on board the Pillar of Autumn for authorization of their mission only to discover that he has been infested and dehumanized.
In a heroic effort Master Chief manually activates the fusion reactors of the wrecked ship despite opposition from Guilty Spark. He manages to escape the impending explosion in a small warship with Cortana. It is later discovered that Guilty Spark also survives the explosion.
